Catching the MAHL dream

By Hillary Smith
Times Columnist | Monday, April 07, 2008

ST. JOHN | When you're seeking a 'For Love of the Game' moment in sports, a player to point to as a guy who wouldn't stop trying, or the next dream chasers, look no farther than Midwest Training and Ice Center.

There's something about watching someone follow his game as far as it will take him to remember movie magic.

A 31-year-old with a shot at rediscovering professional sports. An 18-year-old with a chance to play. Everyone in between with a story.

A minor league tryout -- regardless of the sport -- rarely produces the next great talent.

The "rarely" is usually reserved for the diamonds in the rough like Jim Morris, who became a Major League Baseball player at 35 years old. Those are the guys Hollywood can make $250 million pictures about.

Patrick Kane wasn't on the ice at the South Shore Shooters tryout on Saturday. The next Patrick Kane wasn't out there either.

But when a little guy with a big hockey stick signs an NHL contract, the little forwards come out of the woodwork, knowing their dream can come true. Following that dream is what the Mid-Atlantic Hockey League is about.

The MAHL boasts 40 call-ups last season, sending players to the bigger leagues of professional hockey.

For a first-year league, that was more than the equally talented Southern Professional Hockey League sent (which probably made the 7-year-old SPHL jealous).

Shooter Sign Two MAHL Veteran Players

The SouthShore Shooters of the Mid-Atlantic Hockey League are pleased to announce the signing of two players who will bring both experience and leadership to the team in it's inaugural season. All-star defensemen Brian Jacque from Wilbraham, Mass. and Power Forward Jim Stussy from Beaver Falls, Pa are the first to join the club.
Brian Jacque5'10' 195lb Brian Jacque was an imposing presence on the blue line for the MonValley Thunder last season. He was selected as a starting defensemen in the All-star game. Jacque recorded 2 goals and 20 assists in 24 games last season. Prior to playing for the Thunder, he spent the 2006-7 season in the Serbian Elite League with the H.K. Beostars. Jacque's ability to anticipate the opposition and his vision of the ice will serve as the backbone of the Shooters defense and transition play.

Jim Stussy6'2' 215lb Jim Stussy had a strong finish last season while playing alongside player/coach Darren Seid where he scored 10 goals and added 8 assists in 11 games. After attending camp with Youngstown of the CHL, he joined the Wooster Warriors of the MAHL prior to his success with Seid and Jacque in MonValley.
Stussy plays a physical style of hockey and will be a threat around the opposing net once again.
